King Edward's School Home

An independent day school for boys aged 11 to 18

Royal Air Force Section

There are over 200 (CCF) RAF sections nationwide and King Edward's RAF section has been placed (for the last two years) 3rd out of all these in the RAF's National Training Competition. In recent competitions the section has been the best in shooting, first aid, physical training and RAF knowledge.

Within the school the section currently numbers over 100 cadets from the 4th form to the 6th form and the section's main focus is of course on aviation and flying. Cadets within the section will get to fly on several afternoons each year at RAF Cosford (our affiliated station) where they will initially learn the basics of aircraft control and get to do aerobatics! As the cadet builds up their flying experience they will eventually get to completely take control of the aircraft.

There are also opportunities to go gliding on a Sunday and cadets can be recommended for a week long gliding or flying scholarship where they will eventually go ‘solo'.

As well as two expeditions per year the section also organises parachute jumps, indoor skydiving, flying/shooting days, trips to high ropes courses, climbing walls, go-karting, visits to military air shows and summer camps at RAF stations. In recent years cadets have had the opportunity to test out £6million flight simulators, have had sorties in ‘Dominie' and ‘King Air' aircraft, sorties in ‘Chinook' and ‘Sea King' helicopters and even sorties in ‘Hawks' (Red Arrows).

Some Old Edwardian cadets have gone on to careers within the Air Force - communications specialists, medics, pilots, or simply becoming members of University Air Squadrons. Some have returned from ‘tours' (service) abroad and have given valuable presentations to current cadets on RAF life and working within the air force.

Pupils and parents can access the KES RAF Intranet site to see the latest information on the section.
