Namibia
There is more to education than just lessons in the classroom. Experiencing and being exposed to the ‘big wide world' is just as important. Our link with the Katora Primary School in Namibia has given the opportunity for many King Edward's boys to see first hand how youngsters less privileged than themselves live and learn. By mixing with the pupils, working on projects around the school and through donations of books and sports equipment they have been able to leave their mark for the better on the lives of others.
Each trip to Southern Africa is slightly different but mixes the same components; overland travel through South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia, visiting awe inspiring sites of natural beauty (eg. the sand dunes of Sossusvlei, the Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls), game viewing (eg. the Ethosa and Chobe National Parks, the Otjitotongwe cheetah farm), the school visit at Spitzoppe and with some adrenaline-fuelled adventurous activities along the way (eg. white water rafting, quad biking, bungee jumping, sand boarding, etc.).
Everyone experiences something new; be it the transition from First World to Third World as we travel north, the humbling experience of seeing the lives of people so less fortunate than ourselves, the sense of achievement when pushing yourself beyond your normal comfort zone or the camaraderie generated by living together from a truck as we travel.
And of course there are the sunsets ......
