King Edward's School Home

An independent day school for boys aged 11 to 18

English

In the first year, boys are taught English in mixed ability groups of between 17 and 20, to allow teachers to give them a little more individual attention; thereafter, teaching is in Form groups. Work involves a mixture of literary study, creative writing, tuition in essay techniques, writing skills, drama and oral work. All boys are entered for IGCSE examinations in both English and English Literature. Each year between 15 and 25 boys go on to study English Literature at A Level, and the Department prepares applicants for Oxford and Cambridge. Members of the English Department coach competition Debating, at which we are very successful; edit the School's annual magazine, the Chronicle; and run a range of societies including Drama groups, Literary Society and the Shakespeare Society, a play-reading circle.
