Curriculum in the lower school
In the Shells (Year 7), the number of periods allocated to each subject is as follows:
Most of these subjects are taught in form groups, but in English, Design & Technology and Art there are seven groups (not sets) so that the class sizes are considerably smaller.
Instead of having lessons on Friday afternoons, boys participate in various activities. For the Shells, these activities include an introduction to the school, lessons in Personal, Social and Health Education, games and preparation for Shell Camps, which take place in the summer. In the senior years, there is a choice of more permanent options, like the Combined Cadet Force, Leadership and the Personal Service Group.
The curriculum for boys in the Removes (Year 8) is very similar to that in the Shells. In the Upper Middles (Year 9), boys get the opportunity to choose an additional language, either Spanish or German or Classical Greek, and it is at the end of the Upper Middles that they make their GCSE choices.
